How an author uses a literary device or literary devices in a poem
Write an analytical essay in which you prove a thesis about how an author uses a literary device or literary devices in a poem to create effects and/or convey a theme. The poem you choose MUST be one that is in the book OR one for which you receive instructor approval. Also, you may NOT write on any poem written about in the example essays in the book or provided on Canvas. NO Outside Sources May Be Consulted or Used.
Task Description/Writing Process:
Be sure that you have read all the assigned reading before you begin planning for this essay. You must understand all of the literary devices that poets use. Additionally, what a literary analysis of a poem is before you begin.
After this, choose one of the poems in the book that you find compelling and/or troubling and/or interesting. Without the help of any outside sources, and only your brain and pen, determine the tone and theme(s) of the poem. Then, annotate the poem for a particular literary device. Also, a particular literary device that the author uses to convey a theme(s) or tone. Note HOW particular examples of this device or these devices work to convey the theme(s) or tone of the poem.
Finally, develop a thesis and essay map that will explain, through specific examples of the devices you have chosen and explanation and analysis of those examples. How the author uses these devices to convey a particular tone or theme. Fill out the outline template with these specific examples, and then write the rough draft. Finally, revise this draft and write a final draft. Edit and proofread the final.
Remember, you must carefully choose specific examples from the poem that demonstrate your thesis AND then explain how those examples demonstrate your thesis. DO NOT MERELY SUMMARIZE OR PARAPHRASE THE POEM. ASSUME THAT YOUR AUDIENCE FOR THE ESSAY HAS ALREADY READ AND UNDERSTOOD THE POEM. Your job is to deepen the reader’s understanding.
