Choose one of the following three questions and answer with an essay.

Consider Anthony Giddens’ question: “Is globalization a force promoting the general good?” Answer to what extent globalization is a self-moving dynamic.

Secondly, How may the processes of integration that the term describes be democratized and directed by political communities for the common good?

Thirdly, Make reference to Giddens, Naomi Klein, Benjamin Barber and George Grant in your answer.

Fourthly, Has international terrorism changed under conditions of globalization?

Further, Do the terrorist attacks of September 11 and March 11 represent a fundamental threat to states, or how else should we understand this challenge to liberal democracy?

Additionally, Make reference to the 2002 National Security Strategy of the United States, Shaun Narine, Walter Lacquer, and Michael Ignatieff in your answer.

George Grant writes that: “The aspirations of progress have made Canada redundant. The universal and homogenous state is the pinnacle of political striving. ‘Universal’ implies a world-wide state, which would eliminate war among nations; ‘homogenous means that all men would be equal, and war among classes eliminated. The masses and the philosophers have both agreed that this universal and homogenous state is the goal of political striving.” [Lament for a Nation, Chapter. 5]

Interpret this passage in light of our present experiences of globalization. Why does Grant see technological development as making a distinctive Canadian identity redundant? What role does he see an American empire serving in relation to the processes of integration that globalization describes?
