IMPORTANT NOTE: IT IS CRUCIAL THAT ALL OF THE RULES BELOW BE FOLLOWED IN ORDER TO LEARN THE MOST AND EARN THE HIGHEST MARK. THIS IS A “CHECKLIST” REQUIRING THAT YOU BE ABLE TO CHECK OFF EACH AND EVERY ITEM PRIOR TO SUBMITTING YOUR POWERPOINT FOR A GRADE. IF YOU HAVE LITTLE EXPERIENCE WITH POWERPOINTS, PLEASE SEE MY OFFER TO EACH OF YOU AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS CHECKLIST.
Although the PowerPoint assignment can be a lot of fun, some students do not do well. I have drafted this directive to let you know about the mistakes I consistently see in the PowerPoint assignments. Failure to review the rubric and follow the rubric guidelines can result in less than a satisfactory grade. Please use the PowerPoint rubric to create a checklist. This will help tremendously. Students typically lose the most points in this assignment due to failure to consider one or more of the following:
1. The content slide/face slide (the portion that the audience sees) MUST contain bullet points, for the most part. I recommend no more than six bullet points (with each bullet being one line) per face slide. Bullets are typically summaries of complete sentences, rather than complete sentences. There are times when a complete quote can be inserted. For example, you may need to cite a specific law, word for word. Note: By bullet points, I am referring to “lines” of bullets. So, to be clear, I am recommending no more than 8 “lines” of bullets.
2. Students should add graphics, charts, videos, photos, and other visuals when such an addition would aid the viewer in understanding the subject. Brief video clips may be added.
3. The contrast in the slides should make the slides easy for the viewer to read. For example, don’t put a white print on a light beige or light yellow background.
4. Place your speaking content in the speaker’s notes section UNDER each slide. This CANNOT go on the actual slide that the audience sees. I highly recommend that you also use bullets here. However, for the speaker’s notes, you have the option of doing either bullets or your usual writing.
5. Make sure that the font on each slide is large enough for the viewer to read from a distance of about 40 feet. REMEMBER: IF YOU CAN’T CLEARLY READ EACH WORD AND SEE EACH IMAGE FROM 40 FEET BACK, DON’T INCLUDE IT ON THE SLIDE. AN EXCEPTION MIGHT BE MAPS, GRAPHS, ETC. FOR YOU WILL PROVIDE EACH AUDIENCE MEMBER A HANDOUT FOR THESE SLIDES. NOTE: EVEN WHEN USING MAPS, ONLY USE BIG, BOLD, AND CLEAR MAPS.
6. Don’t crowd your bullets together and leave significant gaps at the top or bottom of the page but, instead, space your bullets evenly.
7. Consider adding brief video clips or voice animation to your slides.
8. Be creative in showing photos of citizens of your country, landmarks in your country, the flag of your country, and other helpful visuals that could be beneficial to the viewer.
9. References must still be APA, current edition. See the APA sample paper. Please do not add images or bullet marks to the reference slide.
10. There MUST be a word count on the bottom right-hand corner of each slide. If word counts are missing, points will be deducted.
11. Print out the rubric and use it as a checklist.
12. The use of country colors can create a unique PowerPoint presentation.
13. The use of transitions can be effective as long as they are not distracting to the viewer.
14. The use of wording only, with the use of very few visuals, can result in a dull PowerPoint and loss of points. Imagine yourself as a member of the viewing audience.
15. Do NOT place multiple images on a face slide. Consider using only one bold image per slide. Under no circumstances should more than two bold images be used per slide. IF YOU CAN’T CLEARLY SEE THE IMAGE FROM THE BACK ROW (40 FEET BACK), DO NOT USE THE IMAGE.
16. If WORD COUNT is not listed in the lower RIGHT corner of the face slide or lower RIGHT corner of the speaker’s notes, you will lose points.
17. Refer to the PowerPoint rubric and assignment instructions for additional information.
Although all of the above are important, it is extremely crucial, once again, that the slides themselves (the portion that the audience sees) primarily contain bullet points. I recommend no more than six bullets per slide. An occasional sentence, quote, or law can be inserted on the slide when necessary. The speaker’s notes (the notes that the speaker uses for himself or herself and which are NOT seen by the audience) MUST be “under” the slide that the audience sees. The speaker’s notes can be done in bullet form or regular written form. Bullet form for speaker’s notes is preferable. The speaker’s notes CANNOT be on the slide itself. There must be a WORD COUNT on the bottom right-hand side of each slide or the bottom right-hand side of the speaker’s notes. If technical issues present problems for you with regard to listing the number of words, you may list the word count for each slide on a slide at the end of the presentation.
RECALL THAT EVERYTHING YOU ARE DOING IN YOUR POWERPOINT PRESENTATION, YOU ARE DOING TO ASSIST THE VIEWER IN ENJOYING YOUR PRESENTATION AND LEARNING FROM IT.
For best results, use this as a checklist. For example, take a pen and mark one by one as you go through the list.

SPECIAL NOTE ON IMAGES: PLEASE USE A BOLD IMAGE OF ONLY ONE OR TWO PRISONERS FOR A SLIDE, RATHER THAN A SCENE OF MANY PRISONERS. PLEASE USE A CLOSEUP OF A COURT SHOWING ONE OR TWO JUDGES, RATHER THAN A SCENE OF THE ENTIRE COURT. VIEWERS ON THE BACK ROW WON’T BE ABLE TO DECIPHER MULTIPLE ELEMENTS IN AN IMAGE. THE ELEMENTS WILL LOOK LIKE ANTS TO THOSE ON THE BACK ROW. I BELIEVE IT NECESSARY TO REPEAT THIS MESSAGE AGAIN BECAUSE STUDENTS SEEM TO REPEAT THESE ERRORS. THEREFORE, JUST IMAGINE YOURSELF SITTING IN THE BACK ROW. WOULD IT BE EASIER FOR YOU TO SEE ONE BIG, BOLD PHOTO OF A COUPLE OF PRISONERS OR WOULD IT BE EASIER FOR YOU TO CLEARLY SEE A JAIL WITH 20 PRISONERS IN IT?
SPEAKER’S NOTES: ALTHOUGH YOU WILL RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE SPEAKER’S NOTES IN EITHER BULLET OR PARAGRAPH FORM, YOUR PRESENTATIONS WILL ALWAYS BE MUCH BETTER IF YOU USE BULLETS FOR YOUR SPEAKER’S NOTES. I URGE EACH OF YOU TO USE ONLY BRIEF BULLETS FOR YOUR SPEAKER’S NOTES SO THAT YOUR PRESENTATION WILL BE MORE PROFESSIONAL. WHEN STUDENTS WRITE IN PARAGRAPHS THEY ARE USUALLY STUCK “READING” THOSE PARAGRAPHS. WHEN BULLETS ARE USED, THE PRESENTER CAN GLANCE DOWN, VISUALLY GRAB THE CONTENTS OF THE BULLET, AND CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN EYE CONTACT WITH VIEWERS. TRY SPEAKER’S NOTES IN BULLET FORM AND IN PARAGRAPH FORM AND YOU WILL IMMEDIATELY UNDERSTAND WHY I AM RECOMMENDING THE USE OF BULLETS
