Social Influence

Writing Assignment # 1

Social Influence

Conformity, Compliance, and Obedience are different types of social influence that are discussed in Chapter 9 of your textbook. You will provide examples of conformity, compliance, and obedience from your own life as well as demonstrate your knowledge of the topics and your opinions about the use of social influence. Specifically, you should do two things for this assignment.

  1. Describe the difference between conformity, compliance, and obedience and give an example from your life of eachof the three.  For example, when is a time you conformed to group norms and why? When did you comply with a request, and what compliance tactic was used (i.e., low-balling, door in the face, etc.)? For obedience to authority, think of a time when you were obedient even though you personally had questions about whether your obedient behavior was the right thing to do.  You should describe each of the examples in detail, providing a description of the situation you were in, how you felt, what you did, and so on.

  1. Is social influence a good thing, or is social influence something that always leads to terrible outcomes such as being duped at a car dealership or delivering painful shocks to individuals? If you believe social influence can be used for good, give a brief example. If you believe social influence is always a bad thing, explain why.
