Scenario:
You receive an email from Rami Vitcher the Site Manager of the Athabasca Alberta site requesting you to call him as soon as possible. Rami reports directly to Regional Director of Alberta and the other ninty-eight staff at Athabasca work directly for him. When you call him he proceeds to inform you of his concern with the Network Technician (Chad) who is working with him onsite but that he knows that works directly for you.

In his words: “I don’t know if you know or not but Chad prior to the start of this summer left his wife. Which isn’t a good thing. I have noticed and have had a number of other staff point out to me that Chad seems to have taken a liking to Lisa (a young clerical staff member). They have been seen spending time together after work and often sit across from each other at meals in the shared meal area. This isn’t appropriate and violates our values here at Xid Inc. Finally, Chad needs to go back to his wife and stay away from Lisa. What are you going to do to fix this?”

You ask the following questions to ensure you get a better idea of the scenario. Rami’s responses are in italics:

1. Is there any perception of preferential treatment (conflict of interest) being given to Lisa from Chad? Is their personal relationship in any away impacting their work (performance)? – “No, they don’t work together or even in the same department. There is no perceived conflict of interest. Both are good workers who get their work done.”

2. Has anyone witnessed behavior or actions that would be described as unprofessional? – “No, they haven’t done anything that we have seen but just the way they look at each other is inappropriate. He is a married man and should act as such.”

You agree to have a conversation with Chad to get additional information and provide an official written response to Rami.
You call Chad immediately and Chad informs you that he has left his wife and has no intentions of going back.

That part of his life is behind him and he is finally out of a horrible and abusive relationship. He plans to formalize the separation and proceed to subsequent divorce. Further, he understands his actions are under scrutiny while onsite at Xid’s facility in Athabasca from his co-workers and the site management. Additionally, he says he doesn’t believe he has done anything wrong. Also, that his relationship with Lisa is just friendship and it doesn’t interfere with their work. You inform Chad that you have committed to follow-up with Rami and that you will let him know if there is anything further you need form him or any changes to be made.
